michele fermanis - winward Michele's interest in beaded jewellery began as a child, with the beauty of her grandmother's Venetian glass necklace. Since then, she has studied the making of glass beads and visited Venice to experience them being made.

During her training as a manufacturing jeweller in the 1980's she began designing and making gemstone necklaces and earrings. With her geologist husband, Michele has researched the rich history of beads from prehistory to the present.

Her jewellery combines semiprecious stones, fresh water pearls, vintage and contemporary crystals and glass, with meticulous attention to professional quality and finish. All pieces bear Michele's makers mark which identifies the work as being hand crafted by her and is your guarantee of its authenticity.

Michele's designs reflect a lifelong interest in mosaic, textiles, and the interplay of light, texture and form. She draws her inspiration from the natural environment, the World Heritage area in which she lives and her extensive travels throughout Australia and Europe.

"My intention when creating Jewellery is that it be well made, timeless, and wearable. I source my materials for their beauty and durability. Each piece is inspired by my delight in nature and a passion for history"

Michele Fermanis-Winward

Since her initial training in sculpture at the National Gallery School, Melbourne and the National Art School, Sydney Australia Michele has continued to explore new techniques. She has exhibited work in numerous media including clay, fibre, glass, metal, print making and precious materials in numerous solo and group exhibitions; as well as teaching. Her work is included in collections in Australia and overseas.

She was a foundation member of the Sydney Inner City Clayworkers cooperative and started working in glass in the 1970's. During the 1980's she completed the three year Jewellery Manufacturing Trade Certificate with distinction.

For nine years she ran Studio Showcase in Sydney; combining her studio with a gallery representing over 100 artists, craftspeople and jewellers.

Michele now has a studio at Blackheath in the Blue Mountains New South Wales Australia, where she continues her exploration of texture, colour and the juxtaposition of contrasting elements.
